Description   Philosophical analysis of the predominant ethical theories from various cultures. Application of these theories from various cultures. Application of these theories to contemporary moral problems such as capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, racism, and same-sex marriage in order to develop a method for approaching moral concerns.

Course Goals  
1. The goal of this course is to enhance your ability to critically evaluate various ethical theories and suggested solutions to the moral problems covered in the course readings. After successful completion of this course you should be able to:
  • define, apply, and critically evaluate some of the more important ethical theories: e.g. subjectivism, relativism, the divine command theory, natural law theory, utilitarianism, Kant's deontology, W.D. Ross's prima facie duties, moral rights, the virtue ethics of Aristotle, Buddha, and Confucius, and feminist care ethics;
  • analyze and critically evaluate some of the arguments surrounding the moral problems covered in the course readings;
  • draw conclusions by synthesizing evidence from various arguments offered as solutions to the moral problems covered in the course readings.
