Description   Introduction to public speaking processes which are designed to help individuals communicate effectively in a variety of speaking situations. This course focuses on developing, organizing, preparing, delivering, and analyzing public presentations. The online sections are not recommended for those students who suffer from speech anxiety and require digital recording equipment.

Course Goals  
1. Learners will differentiate among various types of oral messages by:
  • Define an oral message.
  • Describe an effective vs. an ineffective oral message.
  • Demonstrate effective oral messages through formal and informal presentations.
2. Learners will evaluate oral messages by:
  • Expressing what one has learned during classroom discussions.
  • Demonstrating what one has learned through written self-analysis papers and/or written examinations.
3. Learners will select and evaluate various source materials for creating a presentation by:
  • Recording source material during academic research.
  • Recognizing the difference between creditable and non-creditable source materials.
  • Employing various support materials, i.e., examples, statistics, illustrations, testimony, in one's oral presentation.
  • Adopting visual aids in one's presentation, i.e. computer generated program, interactive video, overheads, photos, models, objects, graphs, or charts.
4. Learners will design an effective oral message, using a variety of organizational strategies by:
  • Proposing an organizational pattern based on logic.
  • Putting to use various organizational strategies for oral presentations.
  • Creating planning and presentation outlines for oral presentations.
5. Learners will analyze and adapt to a speaking situation by:
  • Creating an effective audience analysis during classroom activities and/or written assignments.
  • Recognizing how to appeal to the self-interest of audience members.
6. Learners will describe and employ the basic concepts and procedures of the listening process by:
  • Recognizing the various factors that influence the listening process.
  • Describing the listening process during classroom activities and/or written assignments.
7. Learners will design and deliver an informative speech by:
  • Proposing a topic that is informative in nature.
  • Developing a demonstration speech.
  • Developing a definition, description, or explanation speech.
  • Preparing an introduction, body, and conclusion for an oral presentation.
  • Examining how to use the precision of information.
  • Arranging various types of support material, which will hold the attention of audience members.
  • Creating a presentation that appeals to the self-interest of audience members.
  • Displaying creative thinking in their oral presentation.
8. Learners will design and deliver a persuasive speech by:
  • Proposing a topic that is persuasive in nature.
  • Applying the modes of persuasion during an oral presentation.
  • Applying the questions of fact, questions of value, and/or questions of policy.
  • Developing an outline using Monroe's Motivated Sequence.
  • Relying on only one note card for the oral presentation.
  • Arranging various types of support material, which will hold the attention of audience members and motivate them to action.
  • Creating a presentation that appeals to the self-interest of audience members.
  • Displaying creative thinking in their oral presentation.
9. Learners will design and deliver a special occasion speech by:
  • Recognizing a special occasion speech.
  • Applying a logical or topical order during the oral presentation.
  • Creating a presentation that is inspirational, humorous, or pays tribute to someone.
  • Preparing an introduction, body, and conclusion for an oral presentation.
  • Displaying creative thinking in their oral presentation.
  • Creating a memorized speech for the oral presentation.
