Description   Recognition of annuals, perennials, bulbs and monocots used in the garden and landscape. Usage, design, installation and culture of herbaceous plants in the landscape utilizing a variety of learning resources.

Course Goals  
1. Identify by sight 120 herbaceous plants
  • Name the scientific name, common name and family name of 120 herbaceous plants.
  • Identify by sight the most commonly used herbaceous plants.
  • Name the scientific name, common name and family name of the most commonly used ornamental grasses.
  • Identify by sight the most commonly used ornamental grasses.
  • Name the scientific, common name and family name of the most commonly used annual flowers.
  • Identify by sight the most commonly used annual flowers.
2. Describe the distinguishing characteristics of various herbaceous plants including ornamental grasses.
  • Describe the flower type, flower color and bloom time.
  • List the mature height and width.
3. Describe the cultural requirements of herbaceous plants including ornamental grasses and annual flowers.
  • Recommend the environmental conditions that are necessary to successfully grow various herbaceous plants.
  • Describe the installation procedures for various herbaceous perennials.
  • Explain the procedures to professionally maintain various herbaceous plants.
4. Develop additional means of learning herbaceous plant information.
  • Compile a plant reference book of herbaceous plant materials.
  • Create a database management program with plant names and characteristics.
